With all the past, present and future Google algorithm changes, it’s obvious SEO is an ever changing effort to succeed and dominate the SERPs. The recent Google Fred update, implemented on March 7, 2017, targets low value thin content websites. Showing Google your website is an authority for your particular niche is of great importance which means having better site content and more quality backlinks than your competitors is successful SEO.

High Quality Website Content

Having thin word content makes it more difficult for Google to determine what your website is about. I’ve seen many websites with too many images and not enough word content. Google can’t determine your niche by mostly images even though you may have alt tags for these images. The definition of quality content is about providing your visitors the valuable information they are looking for. What I always strive for is to write information about how your products or services can help people in their everyday lives in the form of blog articles. Google likes fresh and updated old content so get out those old articles and add more valuable content to them.

SEO Optimize Your Page

Needless to say, it is extremely important to do your keyword research before designing your website. Highly competitive keywords will be much harder to rank for and long tail keywords are a great alternative. These long tail keywords consist of 3 to 5 word phrases containing your targeted keywords. There are many long tails with zero search volume because many daily Google searches are for new phrases that have never been searched for in the past. Long tail search phrases are more relevant to particular niches and generally reflect the visitor’s intent better than generic phrases. If a keyword phrase is more specific, it usually brings fewer visitors to your website.

After choosing your targeted keywords, the next task is to implement them in the correct places of your web pages. Many SEO experts recommend to have your most important keywords above the fold but haven’t experienced any difference in SERPs having keywords below the fold. Another recommendation is to put your keywords in the page URL, title, meta description, H1, H2, H3 and H4 paragraph headings. Also don’t forget image alt tag should also contain your targeted keywords. There are SEO professionals who have different opinions on keyword density and never suggest keyword stuffing but write your articles naturally.

There will be visitors who don’t want to read 1200 word of text so I recommend having an embedded video explaining how much value your products or service will benefit them.

Page loading time is extremely important now that Google is pushing most websites to be mobile responsive or lose ranking on mobile searches. Try to optimize any javascript calls and place them before the closing of the body tag . Google’s pagespeed Insights is where you can check your page loading speed. You can also verify if your site is mobile responsive by visiting Google’s mobile friendly test.

Off Page SEO / Internet Marketing

After completing on page SEO, it’s time to get a good ranking by performing off page SEO. The goal of this process if to acquire many high quality backlinks from domain authority websites. You will need more than your competitors to have a chance of outranking them. A good natural link profile is a combination of dofollow and nofollow links. Not recommended to acquire a lot of backlinks to quickly for a new website as this looks manipulative and raises a red flag to Google. Once your site has been indexed with some age, it’s not much of an issue.

What is Domain Authority? It is a score range of 0 to 100 developed by Moz that calculates how well a website is ranking on SERP (search engine result page). Domain Authority is calculated by using particular link metrics such as total number of backlinks and linking root domains. I have seen websites with lower DA outrank sites with a higher DA competing for the same keywords. For this reason, I don’t put much faith in the Domain Authority ranking process and believe it’s all about proving to Google you are more of an authority for your niche than your competitors. This correlates to having better quality page content and more quality backlinks than your competitors.

Apply for a free Google Webmaster and Analytics account which helps you view analytical metrics, submit sitemap, crawl errors, and manually index your site.

Social signals is an indication to Google that people find your social content useful and choose to share it. This can help Google rate your content and subsequently when you start building your backlinks, it looks natural. Get your business registered free on Google Maps. Start a Google+ business page and post articles with backlinks to your website. Pinterest, Linkedin, Tumblr, Blogspot, Facebook, Twitter and Reddit are some of the top social media sites to post articles. Don’t forget to include some anchor text links in your articles pointing back to revelant pages on your website. Don’t use the same anchor text phrases repeatedly, spice up the long tail phrases.

Conclusion

There are many variables of on and off page SEO and any of these omitted from an SEO campaign may result in failure after a lot of hard work wasted. It takes time, persistence and consistent absorption of ever changing Google algorithms. My recommendation is to learn HTLM5, CSS and Javascript instead of using Page Builders or Wordpress templates which are not SEO friendly even with plugins and over bloated.
